The Matchmaker
Traditionally, young Chinese men and women didn't have much of a courtship before getting married. Theirs was a marriage arranged by their parents with the professional help of a matchmaker. The matchmaker negotiates between the two families almost everything about the bride's and the groom's parents' intent to marry them from the acceptance of the bride by the groom's family and vice versa to the paying of the dowries; from wedding plans to the wedding ceremony. Meanwhile, the bride and groom pine for love which either one of them or both may or may not have for the other.
